Manila, Philippines (Updated July 24, 2016) – In May 2016, President Benigno S. Aquino III approved the renewal of franchise for another 25 years of the Progressive Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) and seven other broadcasting networks and three utility companies.
Bro. Eli Soriano, host of the religious program Ang Dating Daan (The Old Path) and UNTV’s major blocktimer, announced the good news on Saturday evening, July 23 during the Thanksgiving to God celebration of the Members Church of God International (MCGI) in Apalit, Pampanga. Through live video streaming, Bro. Eli, Overall Servant to the MCGI, said that given the recent renewal of the franchise, the television station can be used as a channel to propagate the gospel, God willing, for the next 25 years. The event was aired live via satellite in more than 1,360 MCGI satellite monitoring centers in the Philippines and abroad.
The franchise of PBC affiliate, Mabuhay Broadcasting System Inc. (MBSI), was also extended for another 25 years. MBSI operates under “Win Radio” brand of FM stations.
President Aquino signed Republic Act (RA) No. 10820 on May 18, 2016 which renewed PBC’s license for another 25 years. The law grants PBC a franchise to construct, install, operate, and maintain, for commercial purposes, radio broadcasting stations and television stations, including digital television system, with the corresponding facilities such as relay stations, throughout the Philippines.
UNTV News and Rescue
PBC is owned by businessman Alfredo “Atom” Henares. Its flagship television station UNTV News and Rescue (formerly UNTV Life), a public service channel, is operated by Breakthrough and Milestones Productions International (BMPI) headed by its Chairman and CEO Bro. Daniel S. Razon.
Ang Dating Daan
UNTV is the current home of Ang Dating Daan (The Old Path). It is the longest-running religious program in the Philippines which started in 1980, hosted by Bro. Eli Soriano and Bro. Daniel Razon, and produced by the Members Church of God International (MCGI). The program was aired on television in 1983 through IBC Channel 13, later it transferred to PTV-4, RJTV-29, SBN-21 then UNTV in 2004.
Other networks and utility companies
License renewal of other broadcast networks were also approved by President Aquino which includes Radio Veritas-Global Broadcasting System of the Catholic Media Network (CMN), Radio Mindanao Network Inc. (RMN), Far East Broadcasting Company (Philippines) Inc. (FEBC), Contel Communications Incorporated, Christian Era Broadcasting Service International (CEBSI), Eagle Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), Aliw Broadcasting Corporation and Tarlac Electric Inc. President Aquino also signed into law RA No. 10822 which grants the Pipol Broadband and Telecommunications Corporation a 25-year franchise to construct, install, establish, operate and maintain telecommunications systems in the country.
