Manila, Philippines (November 30, 2016) – Broadcast journalist Bro. Daniel S. Razon is celebrating 33 years of service to God and humanity. He was baptized in the Church of God on November 28, 1983 at the age of 17.

Razon also known as “Kuya,” is the Assitant to the Overall Servant (Vice Presiding Minister) to Members Church of God International (MCGI), the group behind the program “Ang Dating Daan” (The Old Path).

Razon oversees the organization, now with more than 1,360 chapters across the globe, together with Bro. Eli Soriano, MCGI’s Overall Servant (Presiding Minister), preaching the gospel through all possible means.

Razon is also the Chairman and CEO of Breakthrough and Milestones Productions International (BMPI), UNTV’s exclusive content provider. Taking over the management of the TV network enables him to launch public service projects and directly helping those in the grassroots.

Early Years

Kuya was born on October 11, 1967 and has been reciting poems in the church at the age of three. He grew up guided by the Holy Scriptures as he accompanied Bro. Eli, his uncle, in nightly town-to-town preaching and doing Bible studies. He got baptized in 1983.

On the same year, he served as the all-in-one director, lightsman, soundman and editor for the program Ang Dating Daan, when it began airing its maiden television broadcast on IBC-13 with a shoe-string budget.

He let go of his dream of becoming a doctor of medicine and pursued Mass Communications instead, heeding the advice of Bro. Eli. This turned out to be very significant to the congregation’s broadcast history. He finished his bachelor’s degree at the Centro Escolar University (CEU) in 1987 as a working student.

Church Ministry

Kuya Daniel decided to join the church’s Workers Ministry. Later, he became an Officer-in-Charge (OIC), now called as “Helpers of the Ministry,” someone who supervise the brethren according to geographical locations. During his stint as OIC of Metro Manila Division, he established the existing organizations in the church such as the Music Ministry.

He also conceptualized the Ang Dating Daan Bible Exposition in 1993, held in large indoor venues, where the audience can ask impromptu questions of faith to Bro. Eli.

The time came when the church needs to appoint a vice presiding minister who will support Bro. Eli in managing the affairs of the church. Though Bro. Eli can directly appoint Kuya Daniel, he asked the brethren to choose from among the nominated OICs. The congregation unanimously voted for Kuya Daniel in December 1997.

Broadcast Career

Razon’s career in broadcast started when he became a disk jockey in DWKY FM (1987) before joining the country’s major TV networks. From PTV-4 (1993) and IBC-13 (1994), he transferred to ABS-CBN (1997), GMA (2003) and UNTV (2005).

In 2005, Razon faced a big challenge when he was forced to choose between his function as deputy presiding minister in the church and his career as news anchor in GMA Network. It stemmed out of the doctrinal conflict between the MCGI and influential religious group Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC), which happened during the height of Razon’s career in GMA. He left his job with the principle that he would rather lose everything, than to lose God.

Take a look at the life, advocacies and public service innovations of Kuya Daniel Razon below:

Breakthrough in Philippine Broadcast Industry

Razon-led BMPI turned then unpopular UNTV-37 to a public service channel, launching innovative concepts in broadcast industry.

Kuya Daniel is the brainchild of“Tulong Muna Bago Balita” (Assist First Before Reporting) in 2010. An advocacy where UNTV converted the network’s roving news patrol cars into news and rescue vehicles. Drivers, cameramen and news correspondents were professionally trained to become emergency responders. News teams were encouraged to prioritize saving lives, rather than being the first to break the news.

Recently, the station was re-branded as an international news and rescue network. Anchors were also trained to become rescue volunteers. It also acquired firetrucks and opened a dedicated hotline, 911-UNTV (911-8688) for those who need emergency assistance.

UNTV was also the first network to use unmanned aerial drones in daily news and traffic situation reporting.

Encouraging Good Works

In 2009, Kuya Daniel and Bro. Eli together with the Kamanggagawa Foundation Inc., launched the “Isang Araw Lang” (Just One Day) advocacy. The campaign aims to encourage everyone to share their God-given talents, skills and resources to help the less fortunate, even in just a day.

They also run orphanages for the elderly, widows, and infants neglected by their parents and transient home for the homeless.

UNTV meanwhile offers regular public services such as free medical, dental and legal consultation, feeding programs and mass blood-letting drives. UNTV and MCGI holds regular medical missions through its Mobile Clinic, reaching far-flung areas in the country.

Kuya Daniel also supports thousands of scholars in La Verdad Christian College which offers free tuition, meals, books and uniforms. A roving school-in-a-bus called “Dunong Gulong,” in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) was also opened to reach remote areas. He also pioneered the “Libreng Sakay” bus running along EDSA.

Kuya Daniel launched the program “Munting Pangarap” (Small Wish) where beneficiaries will be given a small capital for their livelihood. On the other hand, “Serbisyong Kasangbahay” program serves as channel for those who need assistance, either legal or medical, and coursed through UNTV’s partner hospitals and government agencies.

Kuya Daniel also conducts charity concerts and produces independent movies to support the growing public service projects.

Intensified Gospel Propagation

Bro. Eli and Bro. Daniel took advantage of modern technology to intensify gospel evangelization to reach more souls. With the support of the brethren, more souls were added to the fold. Satellite providers were tapped to air MCGI’s religious programs in six inhabited continents and deliver exclusive church broadcast services in all MCGI locales.

In 2011, management of AM station DZXQ was transferred to BMPI and later rebranded as UNTV Radio La Verdad 1350 kHz.

Kuya Daniel also led the gradual modernization of UNTV and UNTV Radio’s outdated equipment. This include the acquisition of new transmitters, broadcast tower and antenna, in preparation for the full transition from analog to digital television. Rollout of relay stations is also ongoing to improve signal reception in provinces.

In 2011, Kuya Daniel launched “A Song of Praise” (ASOP) Music Festival in television to encourage amateur and professional songwriters to create songs for the glory of God. The tilt already produced more than 60 original praise and gospel music compositions.

In 2016, the Live Worldwide Bible Exposition was aired on Facebook Live and YouTube to reach more viewers in social media.

Recognitions

To name a few, Kuya Daniel was given the title of “Doctor of Humanities Honoris Causa” in 2011 by the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) for his public services and charitable works.

In 2013, he was declared “Ultimate Luminary” of Rappler.com and Rexona’s “Do More Awards,” a search for modern Filipino heroes who pushed themselves to make things better.

Thanksgiving Celebration

To celebrate Kuya Daniel’s 33 years of spiritual service, the whole MCGI congregation offered thanksgiving to God. On November 27, MCGI held a one-day “Pasalamat ng Buong Bayan ng Dios” (International Thanksgiving of God’s People).

Kuya Daniel always reiterates that all the glory for the accomplishment and success of each and every project should be given only to the Almighty God. [techthetruth]
